The first time we arrived to Yeruham and we looked around, we were amazed to find the glass mountain. You can say without a doubt that it is the greenest mountain in the desert! A mountain of broken glass that awaits to be recycled at Phoenicia ltd- the local factory that makes glass containers.
As upcycling designers, we are inspired by the materials we find. First comes the material or item and then comes the idea for the design. Very soon we had a tour at the factory and we learned about the manufacturing process. We found out a very interesting detail about that process: when they need to change the color of the glass, lets say from green to brown, they place the brown glass fragments on the green ones, and till the melted glass that is coming out of the machine becomes brown, it is coming out in different colors between that green and brown. almost each container has a different color. This middle tones are unwanted by the companies that the bottles/jars are made for, but we LOVED them. It excited us and filled us with the desire to create something from them that will celebrate the variety of colors. The only problem is that we have no experience and no tools to work with glass… but we are very motivated, and that motivation has led us to a journey, a materialistic research, experimentation and lots of broken glass bottles…an adventure on our way to a new design.
